FOIL FACED ACOUSTIC INSULATION SLABS
Foil faced acoustic slab is known as a composite, ‘shiny’ surface mineral wool board used where a high performance vapour barrier and Class 1 Surface Spread of Flame resistance is required. Foil faced slab provides not only acoustic performance but also outstanding fire properties for both new build and refurbishment projects. Foil faced range product has low emissivity outer layers, which reflect infra-red radiation back into the room, preventing it from exiting the building. The effect that different foil acoustic slabs can be seen is in Knauf RS range products or Rockwool Slabs. Adding a low emissivity foil facing to at least one side of the slab will improve, maybe even triple the thermal resistance. This means that adding a foil facing to insulation can significantly improve the U-value of the construction. The foil facings create a gas-tight barrier, enhancing long-term effectiveness and yielding an insulation board with a reduced (thus enhanced) declared thermal conductivity. This enables a thinner insulation to be used to achieve the same U-value. Foil faced insulation minimises the space taken up by insulation. So choosing foil faced insulation slab can be a positive change.
Moreover, aluminium foil facing slab is one of the latest and most effective forms of insulation available, whether you’re updating the insulation within an older property or working on a renovation project. Foil faced insulation slab is typically considered much more effective than more traditional insulation, because it works to combat three forms of heat transfer, whereas loft rolls and insulation batts tend to just focus on conduction and convection. Additionally, insulation controls water vapour movement, unlike other forms of insulation, providing an extra method to prevent damp and condensation from occurring, which can affect the building as well as reducing the effectiveness of the insulation.
Acoustic insulation slabs with foil facing come in two variants: black foil and silver foil. While the black aluminum foil insulation panel absorbs heat on one side, the silver aluminum foil reflects it. Both can be used in mechanically fixed build-ups.
Choosing black foil-backed insulation offers the advantage of being less noticeable compared to silver foil, especially beneficial for installations in exposed or semi-exposed ceilings.
