Largely manufactured from recycled glass (e.g. windscreens) and mineral base materials such as sand and without the use of binding agents. The ingredients are melted into molten glass, which is cooled and crushed into a fine powder. The powdered glass is poured into molds and heated (below the melting point) in a "sintering" process that causes the particles to adhere to one another. Next, a small amount of finely ground carbon-black is added and the material is heated in a "cellulation" process. Here, the carbon reacts with oxygen, creating carbon dioxide, which creates the insulating bubbles in the (material). CO2 accounts for more than 99% of the gas in the cellular spaces.
Cellulose insulation is a material made from recycled newspaper. The paper is shredded and inorganic salts, such as boric acid, are added for resistance to fire, mould, insects and vermin. The insulation is installed either blown or damp-sprayed depending on application.
Wood fibre
The success of wood fibre insulation derives from an attractive environmental profile combined with a whole bag of functions including rigid insulation, sheathing and sarking for timber frames, roofs and flooring as well as flexible insulation for studs and rafters.
Wood of course is renewable, it sequesters carbon during its growth and product production is relatively free from pollution. The insulation value of wood fibre boards is not as dimensionally efficient as some of the orthodox petro-chemical materials - but it's no slouch either - typically coming in with a 'k value' range of between 0.038-0.043 W/mK depending on format.
Hemp
Hemp fibres are produced from hemp straw of the hemp plant. Most hemp is imported, but an increasing amount of home-grown crop is becoming available. Hemp grows up to a height of nearly 4 metres within a period of 100-120 days. Because the plants shade the soil, no chemical protection or toxic additives are required for hemp cultivation. The product is composed of, usually, 85% hemp fibre with the ballance made up of polyester binding and 3-5% soda added for fire proofing.
Straw
Straw is an agricultural by-product, the dry stalks of cereal plants, after the grain and chaff have been removed. Straw makes up about half of the yield of cereal crops such asbarley, oats, rice, rye and wheat.
Render beads are designed for supporting and strengthening external wall insulation systems. They are made either from UPVC, aluminium, galvanised steel or stainless steel. Corners are more likely to encounter knocks than any other area of the wall surface, so it is very important to provide extra reinforcement with this type of beading. They usually come in lengths of 2.5m and 3.0m. Depending on the bead, usually they come with a lot of holes within it so when bead it is embedded with the adhesive, the adhesive can travel through it. Always be sure not to wrap the base coat mesh around the corner. By doing so you may ‘round’ the corner when installing the bead. This completely immerses the beads, helping to hold them in place. Unlike aluminium beads, plastic corner beads offer a value for money alternative to stainless steel beads. They are made from cost-effective recycled exterior grade, impact resistant, UV stable PVCu and are guaranteed not to stain or corrode like galvanised steel beads, reducing spalling and impact damage. uPVC beads are guaranteed to be fit for purpose for the lifetime of the render and at least 25 years. Using corner beads ensures that even if knocks do occur, then the system will be able to withstand the impact. However, all types of beads are fast and easy to cut to length with tin snips. Beads make your life easier during installation, increase the lifespan of the system and give a better looking final result.
TYPES OF BEADS
CORNER BEAD WITH MESH
Corner bead with mesh is specifically used for thin coat render systems. The mesh and bead are covered over by the basecoat and render and are not visible. This type of corner bead has a thin coat mesh attached to its wings. Because of that, you can achieve a strong, reinforced corner.
BELLCAST BEAD
Bellcast Bead is used for render-only systems, and is intended for creating a reinforced line where the render finishes. It has a lip to direct water away from the bottom of the render and the wall, preventing any issues of damp and condensation build-up.
REVEAL BEAD
Reveal bead is ideal for use around windows to create a clean, crisp finish. It eliminates the need for silicone sealants, as it has rubber which sits on the window frame and compresses to give a waterproof seal.
STOP BEAD
Stop bead is used at the edges of thin coat render systems, typically at window and door frames to provide a straight finish and help protect the render against impacts.
RENDER MOVEMENT BEAD
Render Movement Bead is installed vertically and is primarily used to prevent cracking. It is used to break up and support areas where there is a large expanse of render.
