EXTERNAL WALL INSULATION FIXINGS & FASTENERS

External wall insulation anchor/fixing is a two part product that consists of a screw fixing and insulation washer for use when fixing into insulation boards. Fixings must be installed through the glass fibre mesh cloth after the application of the first pass application of the base coat. Render fixings will be dependent on the thickness of the insulation board and the substrate they will be fixed into. Fixings are delivered in boxes labelled with the type/length of fixing.

They are either screwed or hammered through the insulation and into the wall behind to create a completely secure system. Used in conjunction with the adhesives, the spiral insulation fixings help to ensure that the system will remain stable for years to come. It is recommended to use 40mm to 60mm longer fixings than the thickness of the insulation board to ensure it is strongly anchored to the wall. 

EWI PANEL FIXINGS WIND REQUIREMENTS

EWI Wind Load is defined as the pressure applied on the external wall insulation system due to the effects of wind. Design of any EWI system is required to resist predicted wind load pressure both in relation to the location and the height of the building and taking into account its location, orientation, surroundings and building shape along with the weight of the system. The specified fixings and fixing systems need to be designed to deal with these predicted loads in mind and installed accordingly. Any installed EWI systems must be able to resist the effects of predicted wind pressure. Establishing the suitability of a fastener to anchor into a specific building material is an essential part of planning an insulation fixing system. EWI systems need to be held securely to the structure to resist significant wind-loads and stop the insulation from being torn from the building.­ Failure of an external insulation system can occur if pull-out loads wrench the fixing system from the building or pull-through loads cause the insulation to fail and pull over the heads of the fastener. Depending on wind loads and fixing patterns an oversized washer may be required to increase the surface area of the fastener head. The weaker and thinner the insulating material, the greater the head-diameter or washer needed to hold it in place and to resist pull-through forces.

PLASTIC PIN ANCHOR

The advantage of using PVC insulation fixings is that they help retain the insulation values of a building by mitigating potential heat loss at fastening positions. The plastic nail reduces heat transmission value of 0.3W/K. Pin design reinforced with glass fibre allows fast and trouble-free installation with correct expansion of the plug. They are quick and simple to use. The hammer in screw eliminates the need to use a screwdriver and makes for a quick installation. They are suitable for anchoring polystyrene and rigid foam insulation boards to concrete, bricks & blocks. Made of plastic fixing is reducing a cold bridge meaning that the system maintains its insulating qualities for years. Render fixings are available in most common lengths: 70mm, 90mm, 120mm, 140mm, 160mm, 180mm, 200mm, 220mm and 260mm.

METAL PIN ANCHOR

Metal pin, so called ‘fischer dipk’, is made from a metal pin with plastic bodies, meaning that they reduce thermal bridging within the system. Much like the plastic hammer fixings, these consist of a plastic sheath, but the pin that gets hammered in is made of metal. As you would expect, these are much stronger than the plastic hammer fixings. The metallic rods are hammered in, giving the system stability. Metal fixings comply with BS EN 13501 as a Class A1 non-combustible fastener. These mechanical fixings are suitable for concrete, brick and other block work. If in doubt about the suitability of the substrate, it is recommended a pull test is carried out to ensure it is strong enough to support an EWI system. Downside of metal pined fixing is that metal is a good conductor of heat and can provide a thermal bridge through the insulation, resulting in potential heat loss at fastening positions. Metal fixings can either be screwed in or hammered in depending on the type of insulation and the type of substrate. Anchors are available in most common lengths: 70mm, 90mm, 120mm, 140mm, 160mm, 180mm and 200mm. For example, with the Kingspan K5 insulation system we recommend using metal screw fixings. Because it is more rigid material which makes it harder to hammer the fixings in. Mineral wool is a heavier insulation material, it requires metal insulation fixings which are a lot stronger than plastic, which come with a plastic outer casing to help prevent thermal bridging. Again, this type of fixing is designed to go straight through the insulation board and into the substrate behind to ensure the boards are secure.

CTP TIMBER FIXING

CTP timber fixing so called ‘screwfix’ is an innovative screw-in connector with a metal pin and a telescopic pressure plate for fixing EPS polystyrene to wood substrates. These also have a plastic sheath, but the pin is screwed in, instead of hammered into place. A key advantage of screwing the pin into place is that there is no impact damage caused to the osb board. It offers high parameters of forces pulling mineral wool through the pressure collar. CTP's are available in most common lengths: 50mm, 60mm, 70mm, 80mm, 90mm,100mm and 120mm.
