FIRE SLABS
Fire slabs, as their name implies, are stiff insulation blocks designed to create a barrier against fire during a fire outbreak. They're made of rock wool, which naturally resists fire. Therefore, those slabs are called non-combustible, with a class ‘O’ fire rating.
Their special variant is the Black Tissue Faced (BTF) slab, laminated on one or both sides with a mineralized 70-gram glass fiber fleece. Its alternative version is the slab covered with Black Aluminum Foil (BAF), offering exceptional fire, thermal, and acoustic performance for both new construction and renovation projects.
The Black Foil Faced Insulation Slab is unique fire-resistant insulation solution specifically designed for concrete soffits and other applications where fire rating is of utmost importance. It also provides four times less fibre migration it is especially suited for sensitive areas where any loose fibres would cause problems.
The black aluminum foil on the insulation slab traps heat on one side, unlike the silver aluminum foil that reflects heat. This black foil-backed insulation slab is less noticeable than the silver foil, making it especially useful for exposed or semi-exposed ceiling installations.
FIRE SLABS SIZES
For ease of handling, slabs are generally supplied 1000mm x 600mm or 1200mm x 600mm. Fire slabs include the following readily available product thicknesses:
25mm ǀ 30mm ǀ 40mm ǀ 50mm ǀ 60mm ǀ 75mm ǀ 90mm ǀ 100mm ǀ 120mm ǀ 150mm
Fire slabs can be freely cut in construction according to the shape required.
FIRE SLABS APPLICATIONS
Fire slabs can be installed across a variety of services and substrates including:
- suspended ceilings
- offshore platforms and ships
- under attic rafters
- hidden spaces in partitioned walls
- underneath raised floors
- underfloor parking
- walls
- floors
- timber/metal studs

FIRE BATT
Fire batt is a high density, innovative stone wool core, pre-coated on both sides with a high performance ablative coating providing up to 4 hours fire resistance for sealing a wide range of service penetrations. This batt has been developed to prevent the spread of flames and inhibit heat and smoke through concealed spaces in buildings and improve sound reduction.
Fire batt is tested to provide up to 240min fire resistance whilst also providing an excellent acoustic performance and importantly, maintaining air tightness and reducing unwanted heat losses. Where building services such as pipes, ducts and cable trays, penetrate fire rated walls and structures, the fire batts are appropriate for reinstating the integrity and fire rating of those structures. They can be easily cut to the size and shape of any aperture, using a knife or saw, and inserted into voids around the services to form a smoke tight seal that is capable of holding back fire for up to four hours.
FIRE BATT SIZES
Fire slabs are usually supplied in 1200mm x 600mm size. Most common thicknesses are 50mm and 60mm. Tests have proved the capability of a single 50mm Batt can provide up to 2 hours fire resistance. Where 4 hours integrity and insulation are required it is recommended the use of 60mm Ablative Coated Batt.
FIRE BATTS APPLICATIONS
Fire batts are comprehensively tested and can be installed across a variety of services and substrates including:
- Solid walls and floors,
- Flexible walls,
- Multi-service penetrations,
- Head of wall,
- Blank seals,
- Face-fixed applications,
- Large-framed service voids.
FIRE BATTS MANUFACTURERS | PRODUCTS
Fire batts are manufactured by leading brands and are suitable for use in any project where additional fire proofing measures might need to be taken. In terms of fire protection slabs, Rockwool, Kingspan, Astroflame, Nullifire, Protecta and Sika are the commonly recognised brands.
ROCKWOOL
The ROCKWOOL Ablative Coated Batt comprises a high-density stone wool core, pre-coated on both sides with our high-performance ablative coating. The 50mm Ablative Coated Batt has been certified by UL and CE marked to EAD 350454-00-1104.
KINGSPAN
Kingspan Safire Timber Fire Slab comprises a high density rock mineral fibre insulation core, faced on both sides with a factory applied white ablative coating. Board has an excellent fire resistance - up to 2 hours per 100 mm thick slab.
SIKASEAL
SikaSeal-626 Fire Board, a mineral wool based protection board coated with the fire resistant, ablative coating Sikacryl-625 Fire on both sides providing up to 4 hours.
NULLIFIRE
Nullifire (Firetherm) FJ220 Intubatt 3 Cavity Barrier, a rock fibre compressible slab, with an ablative coating to provide a fire and smoke seal. Supplied pre-configured, ablative coated and factory cured.
PROTECTA
Protecta FR Board is designed to prevent the spread of fire and smoke through openings in fire rated walls and floors where openings are formed to allow the installation of multiple building services. It will also maintain the acoustic design performance in fire rated walls and floors, accommodating movements during fire and smaller movements in the construction it has been fitted within.
ASTROFLAME
Astroflame PFP Fire Resistant Boards are permanently flexible and suitable for most surfaces, including concrete, bricks, masonry, steel, wood, gypsum, glass, plastic and most non-porous surfaces. It can be used in unlimited lengths in walls with heights up to 1200mm and in floors with widths up to 800mm.
