Largely manufactured from recycled glass (e.g. windscreens) and mineral base materials such as sand and without the use of binding agents. The ingredients are melted into molten glass, which is cooled and crushed into a fine powder. The powdered glass is poured into molds and heated (below the melting point) in a "sintering" process that causes the particles to adhere to one another. Next, a small amount of finely ground carbon-black is added and the material is heated in a "cellulation" process. Here, the carbon reacts with oxygen, creating carbon dioxide, which creates the insulating bubbles in the (material). CO2 accounts for more than 99% of the gas in the cellular spaces.
Cellulose insulation is a material made from recycled newspaper. The paper is shredded and inorganic salts, such as boric acid, are added for resistance to fire, mould, insects and vermin. The insulation is installed either blown or damp-sprayed depending on application.
Wood fibre
The success of wood fibre insulation derives from an attractive environmental profile combined with a whole bag of functions including rigid insulation, sheathing and sarking for timber frames, roofs and flooring as well as flexible insulation for studs and rafters.
Wood of course is renewable, it sequesters carbon during its growth and product production is relatively free from pollution. The insulation value of wood fibre boards is not as dimensionally efficient as some of the orthodox petro-chemical materials - but it's no slouch either - typically coming in with a 'k value' range of between 0.038-0.043 W/mK depending on format.
Hemp
Hemp fibres are produced from hemp straw of the hemp plant. Most hemp is imported, but an increasing amount of home-grown crop is becoming available. Hemp grows up to a height of nearly 4 metres within a period of 100-120 days. Because the plants shade the soil, no chemical protection or toxic additives are required for hemp cultivation. The product is composed of, usually, 85% hemp fibre with the ballance made up of polyester binding and 3-5% soda added for fire proofing.
Straw
Straw is an agricultural by-product, the dry stalks of cereal plants, after the grain and chaff have been removed. Straw makes up about half of the yield of cereal crops such asbarley, oats, rice, rye and wheat.

FRIULSIDER® FIXINGS FOR INSULATING MATERIALS
Establishing the suitability of a fastener to anchor into a specific building material is an essential part of planning an insulation fixing system. Friulisider has in offer special fixings and accessories for fixing insulation in external wall insulation systems. Company offers an economical, energy-efficient and secure fixing solution for all 3 types of applications:
Fixings are either screwed or hammered through the insulation and into the wall behind to create a completely secure system. Used in conjunction with the adhesives, the insulation fixings help to ensure that the system will remain stable for years to come.
The weaker and thinner the insulating material, the greater the head-diameter or washer needed to hold it in place and to resist pull-through forces. Friulsider offers a wide variety of fixings in different lengths to accommodate the thickness of your chosen insulation material.
Friulsider® CTP Insulation Panel Fixings for Timber
CTP Wood Fixings for Timber Frame is a high-quality polypropelene head and steel nail fixing designed to secure insulation panels such as EPS (expanded polystyrene) or phenolic Kingspan K5. Friulsider CTP Timber structure insulation panel fixings are suitable for rigid and semi-rigid insulating boards and panels. CTP's are available in most common lengths: 50mm, 60mm, 70mm, 80mm, 90mm, 100mm and 120mm.
ISOfast Insulation Panel Fixings are strong, polypropylene fasteners designed to fix and secure insulation panels to the variety of substrates. The mechanical anchors are made from plastic, which means that they reduce thermal bridging within the external wall insulation systems.
The advantage of using PVC insulation fixings is that they help retain the insulation values of a building by mitigating potential heat loss at fastening positions. The plastic nail reduces heat transmission. Pin design reinforced with glass fibre allows fast and trouble-free installation with correct expansion of the plug. They are quick and simple to use. The hammer in screw eliminates the need to use a screwdriver and makes for a quick installation. Suitable for anchoring polystyrene and rigid foam insulation boards to concrete, bricks & blocks. Plastic pin fixings are mainly used with a combination of external wall EPS (expanded polystyrene) and Kingspan Kooltherm K5 phenolic boards. Made of plastic fixing is reducing a cold bridge meaning that the system maintains its insulating qualities for years.
The plastic pin is 10mm in width (hole diameter) this ensures the fixings are durable and don’t snap during the installation. We recommend that any fixing used is 40mm to 60mm longer than the thickness of the insulation board to ensure it is strongly anchored to the wall. Anchors are available in most common lengths: 70mm, 90mm, 120mm,140mm, 160mm, 180mm, 200mm, 220mm and 260mm. Installation is simple, firstly drill the hole, secondly insert the fixing and gently hammer the plastic pin.
Applications: Concrete | Bricks | Blocks
Friulsider® ISOX-S Insulation Panel Fixings Metal Pin
Friulsider® ISOX-S are hammer in type of fixings with preassembled steel nails. Much like the plastic hammer fixings, these consist of a plastic sheath, but the pin that gets hammered in is made of metal. As you would expect, these are much stronger than the plastic hammer fixings. The metallic rods are hammered in, giving the system stability. Metal fixings comply with BS EN 13501 as a Class A1 non-combustible fastener. These mechanical fixings are suitable for concrete, brick and other blockwork. If in doubt about the suitability of the substrate, it is recommended a pull test is carried out to ensure it is strong enough to support an EWI system. Downside of metal pin fixing is that metal is a good conductor of heat and can provide a thermal bridge through the insulation, resulting in potential heat loss at fastening positions. Metal fixings can either be screwed in or hammered in depending on the type of insulation and the type of substrate. Anchors are available in most common lengths: 70mm, 90mm, 120mm, 140mm, 160mm, 180mm and 200mm.
For example, with the Kingspan K5 insulation system it is recommended to use metal screw fixings. Because it is more rigid material which makes it harder to hammer the fixings in. Mineral wool is a heavier insulation material, it requires metal insulation fixings which are a lot stronger than plastic, which come with a plastic outer casing to help prevent thermal bridging. Again, this type of fixing is designed to go straight through the insulation board and into the substrate behind to ensure the boards are secure.
