PANEL GARAGE DOOR INSULATION

Panel garage door insulation is a rigid panel that consists of phenolic or polyisocyanurate core usually sandwiched between two aluminium foil facings that are high performance, thus creating a tough, lightweight insulation board for the garage door. The "rigid" part of the name comes from the fact that unlike other forms of insulation, it doesn't come loose and compress after installation. Instead, it's a solid, hard foam material. Phenolic boards have a slightly higher R-value and a slightly thinner profile than PIR boards due to the manufacturing process. While PIR offers the lambda value of 0.022W/mK, phenolic closed cell foam offers 0.018W/mK. For comparison, Celotex makes polyisocyanurate rigid foam, so perhaps phenolic is only 10% better then PIR. While PIR insulation boards combine thermal efficiency with an economical price point, phenolic boards do tend to be more expensive. This means that PIR offers superior insulation with the same thickness. On the other hand, phenolic insulation boards have the highest fire rating among many organic insulation materials. It is fire-resistant, flame-retardant and non-combustible in case of open flame. PIR or Phenolic insulation boards are often associated with market leaders such as Celotex or Kingspan. In fact, Celotex invented the thinnest thickness of PIR insulation measuring only 12mm. Many other PIR  brands, such as Xtratherm or Recticel come with a grid marked on, which can act as a guide to help ensure the thermal insulation board is cut in a straight line to fit the garage door nicely. PIR insulation panels turned out to be so good and practical that many people choose to buy a bit cheaper seconds PIR boards which, despite the fact that they were transported and stored, are highly durable and good quality products that they can be used second time. The most popular thicknesses used as a garage door insulation are 15mm, 20mm and 25mm. The simplest and most cost-effective method for insulating a garage door is to use panel insulation. Those boards are available in a wide variety of thicknesses from 12mm to 50mm, allowing you to achieve the desired level of insulation in the garage door.

HOW TO INSTALL PANEL INSULATION TO GARAGE DOOR?

With the garage door closed, remove the horizontal stiffening bars from vertical rails. This will give you clear access to install the panels. Place the top of the panel insulation into the upper section of the door and push it up until it stops. Use the palm of your hand to lightly tap the panel in a downward motion. Gently push the bottom of the panel down past the bottom lip or door section until it stops. Now, you are sure it fits. Take the panel off the door, apply foam adhesive or heavy duty double tape and fit the same panel once again. Continue with the same process with all the panels to complete installation.

Phenolic panel such as Kingspan is a most effective, closed cell, lower lambda insulation material with a fibre-free rigid thermoset phenolic core that can be used to insulate your garage door.
