Largely manufactured from recycled glass (e.g. windscreens) and mineral base materials such as sand and without the use of binding agents. The ingredients are melted into molten glass, which is cooled and crushed into a fine powder. The powdered glass is poured into molds and heated (below the melting point) in a "sintering" process that causes the particles to adhere to one another. Next, a small amount of finely ground carbon-black is added and the material is heated in a "cellulation" process. Here, the carbon reacts with oxygen, creating carbon dioxide, which creates the insulating bubbles in the (material). CO2 accounts for more than 99% of the gas in the cellular spaces.
Cellulose insulation is a material made from recycled newspaper. The paper is shredded and inorganic salts, such as boric acid, are added for resistance to fire, mould, insects and vermin. The insulation is installed either blown or damp-sprayed depending on application.
Wood fibre
The success of wood fibre insulation derives from an attractive environmental profile combined with a whole bag of functions including rigid insulation, sheathing and sarking for timber frames, roofs and flooring as well as flexible insulation for studs and rafters.
Wood of course is renewable, it sequesters carbon during its growth and product production is relatively free from pollution. The insulation value of wood fibre boards is not as dimensionally efficient as some of the orthodox petro-chemical materials - but it's no slouch either - typically coming in with a 'k value' range of between 0.038-0.043 W/mK depending on format.
Hemp
Hemp fibres are produced from hemp straw of the hemp plant. Most hemp is imported, but an increasing amount of home-grown crop is becoming available. Hemp grows up to a height of nearly 4 metres within a period of 100-120 days. Because the plants shade the soil, no chemical protection or toxic additives are required for hemp cultivation. The product is composed of, usually, 85% hemp fibre with the ballance made up of polyester binding and 3-5% soda added for fire proofing.
Straw
Straw is an agricultural by-product, the dry stalks of cereal plants, after the grain and chaff have been removed. Straw makes up about half of the yield of cereal crops such asbarley, oats, rice, rye and wheat.
Phenolic insulation bonded to plasterboard is a premium performance, factory-bonded wallboard to a fibre-free rigid thermoset phenolic core insulant. It provides a level of performance that is unrivalled in the world of rigid thermoset insulation materials with a thermal conductivity of just 0.018 W/mK across all thicknesses. At a slim 62.5mm thickness, they are the only ones meeting the required U-value of 0.28W/m2K. Made with a special material that's eco-friendly, this phenolic insulated plasterboard is perfect for insulation in walls. You can attach it with screws or use ‘Dot&Dab’ technique for a snug fit. PHENOLIC PLASTERBOARD MANUFACTURERS
Depending on the design, you can choose from various brands. All of the brands offer a variety of sizes and thicknesses. Boards are available either in standard or moisture resistant versions. Kingspan Kooltherm K118 and its alternative Unilin Safe-R SR/TB insulated boards are the most effective type of rigid phenolic insulation boards currently available in the UK.
Building Regulations are law and must be met when applied to any project over a certain size. Where 50% or more of the internal wall is being renovated building regulations would normally apply, and the thermal insulation of the wall would have to meet the standards required by building regulations approved documents. The regulation that refers to the thermal efficiency requirements when carrying out renovation or replacement work on an existing dwelling is explained in Approved Document L1B (ADL1B).
For instance, to meet Part L when constructing an extension you need to meet a U-value of 0.28W/m2K. When new layers are added to a thermal element through being dry lined internally the U-value of 0.30W/m2K is required. If at least 50% of the element is being renovated then it should be upgraded to achieve the U-values as follow:
Pitched roof - insulation at ceiling level 0.16W/m2K.
Flat roof or roof with integral insulation 0.18W/m2K.
Pitched roof - insulation between rafters 0.18W/m2K.
KINGSPAN K118 INSTALLATION
Installing Kingspan Kooltherm® K118 Insulated Plasterboard on Knauf Plasterboard Adhesive Dabs should only be used on dry, clean and relatively flat brick, block or concrete substrates. The guidance below should be followed when installing Kingspan Kooltherm® K118 Insulated Plasterboard with Knauf Plasterboard Adhesive Dabs.
Services may be contained within the depth of the dab provided (10 – 25mm) however, where there is inadequate space to incorporate these services behind the Insulated Dry–Lining, minimum chasing of the background may be required. Alternatively services should be relocated onto an internal wall or onto the new wall lining surface of Kingspan Kooltherm® K118 Insulated Plasterboard.
Drywall adhesive should only be used when the substrate does not exceed 15mm in either vertical or horizontal direction. Use a straight edge to determine the gap.
If the wall tolerances exceed this, a framing system solution should be used instead i.e. metal wall liner, timber battens or independent metal or timber framework.
Projecting window boards, dado rails, mouldings etc. will need to be removed along with wallpaper and gloss paint in order to provide a key for the adhesive.
Substrate key or suction can be improved or controlled by the application of a bonding agent such as PVAC conforming to BS 5270-1: 1989. Where required this should be applied in bands corresponding to the adhesive layout onto the substrate.
When setting out, use a 10mm thick packer or shim and a small offcut of Kingspan Kooltherm® K118 Insulated Plasterboard, place both onto the highest point of the wall, then use a straight edge and spirit level. Once plumb, draw a short line across the floor and ceiling.
Extend the lines on the floor and ceiling to the corners of the room by either, snapping a chalk line from one end of the wall to the other or alternatively using a laser level.
The chalk line or laser line will indicate where the front edge of the board will follow.
These lines are used as a guide when pressing Kingspan Kooltherm® K118 Insulated Plasterboard into place.
Set out vertical lines at 1200mm centres onto the masonry to indicate board positioning, marking out any doorway or window openings.
When ready, apply a continuous band of drywall adhesive around the perimeter of the wall, around openings and around all services. This is to provide support for the board edges.
Each drywall adhesive dab should be 50 – 75mm wide and approximately 250mm long, positioned vertically at 300 mm centres and horizontally at 600mm centres (the adhesive should cover 20 % (min.) of the board area).
Kingspan Kooltherm® K118 Insulated Plasterboard should be cut approximately 15mm short of the floor to ceiling height when adhering the board into position.
Working from the bottom up, the boards should be positioned on plasterboard packing strips or shims, tapped into position and gently lifted using a foot lifter until the board is tight against the ceiling. Additional packing strips may be inserted at the base to wedge the board in place.
All adhesive types should be applied approximately 25mm in from the edge of the boards to avoid bridging the joint.
Once the adhesive has set (consult manufacturers guidance, this generally takes between 1.5 and 3.5 hours), add a minimum of two appropriate fixings per board (when using Knauf plasterboard adhesive).
Fixings should be added 15mm in from the tapered edge so that they are covered when the boards are jointed or skimmed.
Select fixings of a sufficient length to give a 25mm (min.) penetration into the masonry (unless otherwise stated by the fixing manufacturer).
Drive each plug in until the head is slightly below the plasterboard without fracturing it.
Further boards should be installed and lightly butted together to complete the lining.
Upon completion of the Kingspan Kooltherm® K118 Insulated Plasterboard installation, seal the perimeter of the board and fill the 15mm clearance gap at the bottom of the wall to provide an airtight seal.
