K Rend® Evolution

K Rend was established over 80 years ago. Rapidly became “way out” of painting the external wall of a house. Today the company is known as the UK’s largest independent pre-mixed silicone render manufacturer. One of the biggest changes over 80 years has been in mechanisation. In the 1930s horses and hand pushed bogies were used for transport within the quarry. All the stone was lifted manually until the mid-1950s when a rope face shovel was introduced. A lot has changed since then with the company heavily investing in machinery as it has expanded. Another big change has been the utilisation of computer technology both for the control of machinery and revolutionising office life. Kilwaughter Minerals Ltd has been an established quarry and mineral processor since 1939. In the late 1980s the company began to focus on the design and manufacture of renders using calcium carbonate lime quarried on site. The render is marketed under the K Rend brand name and has since grown from a small, family-run firm into a market leader in the UK and Ireland supplying render to the construction industry. Manufacturing and production facilities are situated at headquarters in Larne, Northern Ireland, with manufacturing operations covering a combined area of over 75 acres, from which they produce in excess of 200,000 tonnes of materials per annum. Today, K Rend manufacturing plant has some of the most advanced production facilities in Europe, using some of the most elaborate and state of the art technology. 

In 1989 the company manufactured its first render products, K Rend. After an initial three years of developing the products and getting a foothold in the market the business steadily expanded to where it is today.

K Rend is the only render product in today’s UK & Ireland market that has been awarded the prestigious Kitemark license to BS EN 998:2003. Kitemark schemes are voluntary, illustrating commitment to providing customers with the very best quality and service. K REND® SYSTEMS

External Wall Insulation systems are designed to improve the energy efficiency of your property by adjusting the type and thickness of the insulation used within the system. K Systems have developed EWI systems to suit every building and construction type with the opportunity to transform the outside of a property with a durable, low maintenance solution. K Systems incorporate an extensive range of finishes and colours ranging from dash effects and silicone textured render. K-rend systems are for use on new-builds or refurbishments which are low-rise or high-rise construction. The K Rend Systems solutions are suitable for both mixed-use and residential developments.

K Systems produce a diverse range of tested and certified external wall insulation systems suitable for all types of construction. K Systems aim to achieve architectural aspirations with a wide choice of colours, textures & tailored detailing solutions.

The K Rend silicone range incorporates silicone water repellents as part of the cement based render system. This silicone technology imparts a high degree of water repellency to the render surface whilst allowing water vapor to pass through the render allowing the substrate to breathe. The water repellent surface ensures a freshly rendered appearance for a prolonged period. The finish is drier, thus more resistant to algae growth and the phenomenon of limebloom.

K System M (Mineral Wool External Wall Insulation System)

The K Systems M external wall insulation system generates exceptional performance and provides the highest levels of fire resistance and non-combustibility. Mineral wool insulation has excellent environmental properties containing no gases with ODP or GWP. This system is suitable for new-build or refurbishment projects. The system is commonly fixed on masonry structures on high-rise buildings. K Systems M can also be used on residential buildings with steel frame, timber frame on concrete structures.

K System E (Expanded Polystyrene External Wall Insulation System)

The K Systems E external wall insulation system is a high-performance, light-weight system based on Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) Insulating Panels that incorporate microscopic particles of graphite for enhanced thermal performance that allows heat to dissipate. The systems are suited for the upgrade of existing buildings and for new buildings, particularly where high levels of thermal performance is required. The system is commonly fixed on to masonry structures, K Systems E can also be fixed on to alternative structures to meet specific project requirements.

K System P (Phenolic External Wall Insulation System)

The K Systems P external wall insulation system incorporates high performance rigid thermoset Phenolic Foam Insulation Boards. This lightweight, low thermal conductivity insulation enables high levels of thermal performance to be achieved utilising thinner sections of insulation. These systems are an ideal solution for buildings that cannot increase their footprint significantly due to encroachment onto pavements, pavements, passageways or proximity to adjustment properties. 

RENDERS

The K-Rend brand produces a range of external renders that offer a high-quality coloured finish that provides durability and weatherproof protection to the exterior of properties. They are hugely popular as they can make any property look brand new, helping to cover damaged or tired looking brickwork. Silicone renders generally last upwards of 25 years thanks to their ability to flex with the movement of external walls and their high breathability.

K-Rend represents the most popular brand of silicone render currently in the UK. K rend provides a wide range of textures and finishes to suit the style and needs of your property. Company aim is to provide an aesthetically pleasing and long lasting surface to the outside of your property.

Renders come in a variety of colours and textures, over 500 different options in fact, so that you can choose exactly the look that you want.

K Rend Primers

Before K Rend Thin Coats are applied, the backgrounds should be primed with K Rend Primer TC. Primer TC is a ready to use priming paint which is quick and easy to apply by brush, roller or spray. It is available in a wide range of colours which are coordinated to the colour of Silicone TC or Mineral TC topcoats. Primer TC should be used after the application of K Rend Base Coat and before Silicone TC or Mineral TC.

K Rend Base Coats

HP12 Base Coat is used as a preparation coat for K Rend top coat finishes. HP12 Base Coat can be hand or machine applied. It uses ‘High Polymer’ technology for an enhanced performance on difficult substrates such as dense block, unpainted render and brickwork. It is ideal as a stipple coat or for dense backgrounds and has increased water resistance and adhesion. Incorporation of Alkali Resistant Reinforcing Mesh may be required at stress points such as door and window reveals. HP12 Base Coat can be used in conjunction with all K Rend finishes including Scraped Texture, Thin Coat, Dash, Roughcast and Brick Rend.

HP14 Base Coat is a preparation coat for K Rend top coat finishes. HP14 Base Coat can be hand or machine applied. It uses “High Polymer” technology for an enhanced performance onto a wide variety of insulating substrates such as enhanced polystyrene, phenolic and mineral wool. It is designed as the ideal background for thin coat organic resin render such as Silicone TC. Alkali Resistant Reinforcing Mesh should be used in conjunction with HP14 Base Coat at stress points such as door and window reveals.

HPX Base Coat can be hand or machine applied. It is an ultra high performance base coat render incorporating high polymer technology and fibres. It can be used on unusual substrates requiring greater flexibility and adhesion such as lightweight block or high suction brick, often incorporating an Alkali Resistant Reinforcing Mesh at stress points such as door and window reveals. HPX Base can be used in conjunction with most K Rend finishes including Dash, Scraped Texture and Brick Rend.

Standard UF Base is a preparation coat for K Rend top coat finishes. Standard UF Base can be hand or machine applied. It is a high quality general purpose base coat with excellent workability qualities, designed to be used over medium density block work as a primary coat for any K Rend finish.

K Rend Finishing Coats

K Rend Silicone TC 15 is an organic resin, low maintenance render with a textured finish. Silicone TC 15 is a self-coloured render and can be hand or spray applied. It is a ready to use organic resin render which is applied to provide a low maintenance textured finish. It is also available in different textures (TC 05, TC 10 & TC 30) and a wide variety of colours. Prior to application the substrate should be primed using Primer TC.

Acrylic TC is a synthetic resin plaster incorporating an Acrylic resin dispersion in a ready to use render. Acrylic TC is a ready to use synthetic resin plaster which is quick and easy to apply and is available in a wide range of colours. It provides excellent adhesion and application properties and, following appropriate preparation, can be applied to a wide variety of substrates. Acrylic TC is a cement-free render with greater flexibility and provides a low maintenance textured finish. Although primarily for external application, it can be used internally.

Mineral TC is a cement based, polymer modified render and provides an attractive, low maintenance finish. It can be applied when temperatures are as low as 5 degrees. Mineral TC is applied by hand. It is a cement based, polymer modified render, requiring only the addition of water and 10 minutes mixing time. It will provide an attractive, low maintenance finish and is available in two textures (2 & 4) and four standard colours.

Silicone K1 is a through-coloured render which incorporates silicone technology. Silicone K1 is suitable for use with most render spray machines and can also be hand applied. It is ideal for larger projects where the speed of machine application can offer time saving benefits. Silicone K1 provides a fine texture finish.
