KINGSPAN® HISTORY
Kingspan company is based in Ireland, trading in over 70 countries with 159 factories. In fact, Kingspan is one of the UK and Ireland’s most diverse and experienced manufacturers of insulation products, manufacture a wide range of premium building materials including:
EWI Boards, Rainscreen Boards, Roof Insulation Boards, Floor Insulation Boards, Insulated Plasterboards, Frame Insulation Boards and Cavity Insulation Boards.
Founded in 1965 and headquartered in Ireland, Kingspan Group has a long and diverse history. Starting as a small engineering and contracting business, owner Eugene Murtagh began manufacturing agricultural trailers from behind his family's bar, Murtagh's in Kingscourt Co. Cavan.
Soon after, the company started creating energy efficient buildings. In 1989, Kingscourt Construction Group was renamed Kingspan Group. It was a decisive moment for the company. In 1996, Kingspan Insulation announced a new product range of higher performance phenolic foam insulation boards called Kingspan Kooltherm range. This new range of premium performance phenolic Kingspan materials command a stunning 0.18 W/mK thermal conductivity. Therefore resulting in an exciting step forward from an innovative company in the insulation industry. Conversely this will allow for the installation of thinner materials or for higher insulation values to be achieved in construction.
Kingspan Insulation also makes insulation products called Kingspan Therma. Part of this insulation range is the general purpose Rigid Insulation Boards ( PIR ) TP10 Thermapitch , TF70 Thermafloor and TW55 Thermawall.
All Kingspan products and services are proven to work, certified to all necessary standards. Boards are manufactured under a management system certified to ISO 9001: 2015 (Quality Management Systems. Requirements), ISO 14001: 2015 (Environmental Management Systems. Requirements), ISO 45001: 2018 (Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems.
Kingspan boards used in house building and refurbishment come in two different types: the standard, and very popular Therma Range, and the more premium Kooltherm K-range. Below table we detail the products available in both ranges.
Kingspan Kooltherm Range (Phenolic Insulant)
The Kingspan Kooltherm K-range comprises the thinnest commonly used insulation products for any specific U-value. With a fibre-free rigid thermoset phenolic core, and a thermal conductivity of 0.018 - 0.023 W/mK, these are the most thermally efficient insulation products ever made. Importantly Kooltherm’s insulation core is made using a blowing agent that has a low global warming potential and zero ozone depletion risk. Kooltherm range phenolic insulation products have been divided into individual applications, all of them without exception, provide a level of performance that is unrivalled in the world of rigid thermoset insulation materials with a fibre-free rigid thermoset phenolic core. In performance terms, the K-range products can be considered to be industry leading, premium insulation. Kingspan is always looking for ways to improve the insulation that it manufactures and this new Kooltherm range is proof.
Below we detail the products available in K-range.
Kingspan Kooltherm K103 Floorboard is a new, premium performance floor insulation that provides a thermal conductivity of just 0.018 W/mK across all thicknesses. Kingspan Kooltherm K103 replaces Kingspan Kooltherm K3. Manufactured with a blowing agent that has zero ODP and low GWP, it is used to insulate beam and block, concrete and timber floors, screed finished floors or suspended timber floors. K103 offers both a higher degree of insulation along with a higher compressive strength.
Kingspan Kooltherm K106 Cavity Board is a premium performance full fill cavity wall insulation that is used to insulate cavity walls with just a 10mm residual cavity. It features a water tight, vapour- open polypropylene fleece and the inner facing is a low emissivity foil that has been bonded to the insulation core during manufacture. Kooltherm K106 insulation is unaffected by air infiltration and is easy to both handle and install. An excellent choice when constructing new cavity walls requiring high performance insulation qualities.
Kingspan Kooltherm K15 Rainscreen Board
Kingspan Kooltherm K15 Rainscreen Board is an advanced insulation solution for use behind rainscreen façades. Kingspan Kooltherm K15 is a Phenolic insulation with higher thermal resistance than standard PIR. With a thermal conductivity as low as 0.021 W/mK, Kooltherm K15 is one of the most thermally efficient insulation products commonly used. The K15 Rainscreen Board is thoughtfully manufactured without using CFCs/HCFCs and is manufactured to ISO 14001: 2015 and certified to BES 6001. It’s used for rainscreen cladding systems with non-proprietary external finish, or with terracotta clay tile external finish and as rainscreen cladding systems on steel frames.
Kooltherm K108 Cavity Board
Kingspan Kooltherm K108 Cavity Board is a thinnest commonly used insulation for partial fill cavity walls, allowing U-values to be met with minimal thickness. It is faced on both sides with a low emissivity composite foil facing. This reflective, low emissivity surface improves the thermal resistance of any unventilated cavity adjacent to the board. This high performance board when used at 120mm thickness and with aerated blocks can achieve ‘U’ Values as low as 0.12 W/mK. Having a higher grade of insulation in the cavity allows for a thinner insulation to be used on the interior of the construction. Kingspan Kooltherm K106 and K108 are certified to BES 6001 (Framework Standard for the Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products) ‘Excellent’.
Kingspan Kooltherm K107 Pitched Roof Board is a premium performance insulation with a fibre-free rigid thermoset phenolic core and a low emissivity foil outer face. With a higher rated thermal conductivity Kooltherm K107 replaces Kingspan Kooltherm K7. It can be installed at a thinner thickness than the standard PIR insulation board to hit the required target ‘U’ Value. With a Super low thermal conductivity of 0.018 W/m.K Kingspan K107 has to be the number one choice when installing roof insulation. K107 should be able to cover most current roof insulation projects. Importantly K107 insulation boards are to be used in cut to fit roof insulation projects and for use under rafter to eliminate any possible cold bridging through the roof timbers. Because this phenolic foam roof insulation can reach high thermal resistance values you are able to keep the thickness to a minimum.
Kooltherm K110 is an advanced soffit insulation solution offering a thermal conductivity of just 0.018 W/mK. This unrivalled thermal performance allows for an extremely thin structural ceiling (soffit) construction. The boards are quick and easy to install - they can be installed quicker than rock mineral fibre and can result in a 60% greater surface area being installed in a given time, saving you money on labour costs. K110 is the thinnest commonly used insulation for soffits, allowing U-values to be reached with minimal thickness. Its quick installation means you can save on labour costs.
Kooltherm K110 PLUS is an advanced soffit insulation solution with an impact resistant building board for when an improved finish is required. The boards have a thermal conductivity of just 0.018 W/mk for the insulation component, providing unrivalled thermal performance and an extremely thin structural ceiling (soffit) construction.
Kooltherm K118 Insulated Plasterboard
Kingspan is also the world’s largest and leading manufacturer of high-performance insulated panel building envelopes. Powered by Kingspan’s proprietary and differentiated QuadCoreTM insulation core technology, a Kingspan panelised envelope provides building owners with consistently superior build quality and lifetime thermal performance compared with built-up constructions using traditional insulation.
Kingspan Kooltherm K118 insulated plasterboards are modified resin insulation boards laminated to 12.5mm tapered edge standard plasterboard. This insulated wallboard replaces the Kooltherm K17 and Kooltherm K18 insulated plasterboards and has a higher thermal conductivity. They are designed for dot and dab applications using drywall adhesive. It is advised to use a few mechanical fixings on these boards at the same time as fixing with drywall adhesive. Although it can work out more expensive than buying the separate plasterboard and insulation sheets it can save labour costs by being a single fix product enabling a far more quicker installation.
Kingspan Kooltherm K5 External Wall Board is an external insulation for masonry walls. The insulation core has a glass tissue-based facing on both sides. The glass tissue gives an ideal face to render on once fitted with the appropriate render mesh. Kooltherm K5 insulation is suitable for use behind both traditional and lightweight polymer modified render systems. Furthermore it is also suitable for dry cladding systems. These include tile hanging or external timber claddings and their artificial alternatives. This high spec external insulation board can be an ideal product when upgrading an old property. Importantly giving the opportunity of being able to save room size by not having to add additional insulation to the inside skin. Depending on the insulation thickness, Kingspan Kooltherm K5 provides a thermal conductivity between 0.021 W/mK and 0.022 W/mK.
Kingspan Therma Range (PIR Insulant)
Kingspan boards used in house building and refurbishment come in the standard and very popular Therma Range. The Therma range are zero ODP ( meaning zero ozone depletion ) high performance rigid urethane insulants. They are the most popular Kingspan boards and can be used in roof pitches and spaces, walls and on floors.
Confusingly, one board carries three of the codes "TP10", "TF70" and "TW55" - this is the same board, so the codes can be used interchangeably! In performance terms, the Therma range boards directly compare with the Celotex GA4000 range.
Below we detail the products available in the Therma range.
Thermapitch is Kingspan roof insulation board and is made for use as pitched roof insulation. This would usually be their range of PIR insulation boards from 50 mm to 150mm which can be friction fit in between rafters. In addition a thinner layer of Kingspan TP10 under the rafters to cover any possible cold bridging through the timbers. These thermal bridging boards would usually be from 25mm to 40mm thick.
TF70 denotes its use in under slab or suspended floor insulation. A thick board generally starting from 75mm upwards is placed over a damp proof membrane and then covered with another layer of membrane before screed is applied. A thinner board would be used, usually 25mm wide. The perimeter insulation should be cut into strips to cover the depth of the floor insulation and screed combined.
TW55 denotes its use as a wall insulation. This quality insulation board can be used for insulating partition walls or inside of solid external walls. These could either be applied in between stud partition walls or covering the entire wall before a plasterboard finish is applied.
Kingspan TW50 Thermawall Cavity Wall Board is a high-efficiency, BBA certified insulation with a fibre-free rigid thermoset polyisocyanurate (PIR) core designed for partial fill masonry cavity walls. Thermawall is stable and rot proof cavity insulation board and will remain effective for the life span of the building. With Kingspan 1200mm x 450mm insulation board a clear cavity is maintained and resistant to moisture penetration.
Kingspan Thermaroof TR24
Kingspan Thermaroof TR24 is a rigid insulation board used for flat roof insulation, consisting of a rigid thermoset insulation core, covered with a glass tissue coated with bitumen. Its upper surface is finished with a thermofusible polypropylene fleece, while the lower surface is covered with mineralized glass tissue. It is especially designed to work with most fully bonded torch applied multi-layer bituminous waterproofing.
Kingspan Thermaroof TR26
Kingspan Thermaroof TR26 is a high performance, fibre free, rigid thermoset PIR insulation core faced on both sides with a low emissivity composite foil facing which is used for insulating flat roofs and is fully compatible with most mechanically fixed single–ply waterproofing systems and most green roof systems.

Kingspan Nilvent
Kingspan Nilvent comprises a laminated, 3–layer polyolefin construction. The top layer provides protection from UV and mechanical damage. The middle layer is the functional layer. The bottom layer provides abrasion resistance. Kingspan nilvent has a light grey upper surface, printed with the Kingspan nilvent logo, and a dark grey lower surface. Nilvent will give a completely watertight structure under normal weather conditions. Kingspan nilvent is airtight, when tested at normal building pressures. It is highly water resistant, and has the added advantage of self–sealing around nail penetrations. Kingspan Nilvent breathable membrane negates the need for ventilation directly above the insulation layer. It does this because it has a low vapour resistance, which allows water vapour to escape through the breathable membrane to the outside of the building.
Kingspan GreenGuard GG300
Kingspan GreenGuard is a fibre-free rigid extruded polystyrene insulation (XPS) that has the necessary compressive strength to make it the product of choice for specialist applications such as heavy duty flooring, car park decks and inverted roofs. This high performance rigid extruded polystyrene (XPS) insulation board can resist water absorption and water vapour passage. The board is chlorofluorocarbon (CFC), hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) free and manufactured with a blowing agent that has zero ozone depletion potential (ODP) and low global warming potential. GG300 XPS insulation can be used for inverted roofs, basements, car park decks, and heavy-duty commercial, industrial and cold store flooring.
