Largely manufactured from recycled glass (e.g. windscreens) and mineral base materials such as sand and without the use of binding agents. The ingredients are melted into molten glass, which is cooled and crushed into a fine powder. The powdered glass is poured into molds and heated (below the melting point) in a "sintering" process that causes the particles to adhere to one another. Next, a small amount of finely ground carbon-black is added and the material is heated in a "cellulation" process. Here, the carbon reacts with oxygen, creating carbon dioxide, which creates the insulating bubbles in the (material). CO2 accounts for more than 99% of the gas in the cellular spaces.
Cellulose insulation is a material made from recycled newspaper. The paper is shredded and inorganic salts, such as boric acid, are added for resistance to fire, mould, insects and vermin. The insulation is installed either blown or damp-sprayed depending on application.
Wood fibre
The success of wood fibre insulation derives from an attractive environmental profile combined with a whole bag of functions including rigid insulation, sheathing and sarking for timber frames, roofs and flooring as well as flexible insulation for studs and rafters.
Wood of course is renewable, it sequesters carbon during its growth and product production is relatively free from pollution. The insulation value of wood fibre boards is not as dimensionally efficient as some of the orthodox petro-chemical materials - but it's no slouch either - typically coming in with a 'k value' range of between 0.038-0.043 W/mK depending on format.
Hemp
Hemp fibres are produced from hemp straw of the hemp plant. Most hemp is imported, but an increasing amount of home-grown crop is becoming available. Hemp grows up to a height of nearly 4 metres within a period of 100-120 days. Because the plants shade the soil, no chemical protection or toxic additives are required for hemp cultivation. The product is composed of, usually, 85% hemp fibre with the ballance made up of polyester binding and 3-5% soda added for fire proofing.
Straw
Straw is an agricultural by-product, the dry stalks of cereal plants, after the grain and chaff have been removed. Straw makes up about half of the yield of cereal crops such asbarley, oats, rice, rye and wheat.

It is designed to withstand typical conditions on-site and absorb any irregularities on the inner leaf. Consists of a robust outer surface engineered to a resilient inner face. The slabs knit together when tightly butt jointed, eliminating heat loss caused by gaps.
Applications
Buildings up to and including 12 metres:
a. The product can be used in any exposure zone where a residual cavity width of 50mm or greater is maintained. However, the use of the product does not preclude the need to apply any external render coat or other suitable finish in severe exposure zones where such application would be normal practice.
b. The minimum residual cavity width to be maintained during construction must be 25mm. To achieve this requirement, a greater nominal residual cavity width may need to be specified at the design stage to allow for inaccuracies inherent in the building process (a residual cavity nominally 50mm wide will be required by the NHBC where normal standards of tolerance and workmanship are adopted).
Buildings over 12 metres in height:
The width of the residual clear cavity to be achieved should be a minimum of 50mm, and the following requirements apply:
a. From ground level, the maximum height of continuous cavity walls must not exceed 12 metres.
b. Above 12 metres, the maximum height of continuous cavity walls must not exceed 7 metres.
c. In both cases breaks should be in the form of continuous horizontal cavity trays discharging to the outside.
d. Where the cavity width is reduced for structural reasons, e.g. by the intrusion of ring beams, a minimum residual cavity width of 25mm must be maintained and extra care must be taken with fixings and weatherproofing, e.g. the inclusion of a cavity tray.
ROCKWOOL Cavity Batts provide thermal protection for external masonry walls, and thermal and sound protection within masonry party walls, between dwellings. The batts are quick and easy to accurately cut, and provide a great fit; reducing installation time, avoiding gaps and cold spots, and maximising long term performance. The product consists of a strip of semirigid non-combustible ROCKWOOL insulation, bonded to a black polyethylene DPC.

ROCKCLOSE® has been specifically developed to minimise thermal bridging at door and window reveals whilst also providing a fire-resistant cavity closer. The effect of thermal bridging has been a long-recognised problem, which has been given even greater significance under the new Part L Building Regulations. In a typical building, as much as 20% heat loss can occur around the door and window reveals if not correctly addressed. Building Regulations require that thermal bridges that occur at junctions between building elements are included in the calculation of transmission heat losses.
ROCKWOOL TCB & PWCB cavity barriers are manufactured from non-combustible stone wool, encapsulated within a resilient polythene sleeve which eliminates the need for weather protection during installation. ROCKWOOL Timber Frame Slab is a semi-rigid insulation designed specifically for use between the studwork of external timber frame walls. When building with timber, using noncombustible ROCKWOOL insulation can help to reduce the risk of fire, and fire spread, particularly during the more vulnerable construction phase.
