Largely manufactured from recycled glass (e.g. windscreens) and mineral base materials such as sand and without the use of binding agents. The ingredients are melted into molten glass, which is cooled and crushed into a fine powder. The powdered glass is poured into molds and heated (below the melting point) in a "sintering" process that causes the particles to adhere to one another. Next, a small amount of finely ground carbon-black is added and the material is heated in a "cellulation" process. Here, the carbon reacts with oxygen, creating carbon dioxide, which creates the insulating bubbles in the (material). CO2 accounts for more than 99% of the gas in the cellular spaces.
Cellulose insulation is a material made from recycled newspaper. The paper is shredded and inorganic salts, such as boric acid, are added for resistance to fire, mould, insects and vermin. The insulation is installed either blown or damp-sprayed depending on application.
Wood fibre
The success of wood fibre insulation derives from an attractive environmental profile combined with a whole bag of functions including rigid insulation, sheathing and sarking for timber frames, roofs and flooring as well as flexible insulation for studs and rafters.
Wood of course is renewable, it sequesters carbon during its growth and product production is relatively free from pollution. The insulation value of wood fibre boards is not as dimensionally efficient as some of the orthodox petro-chemical materials - but it's no slouch either - typically coming in with a 'k value' range of between 0.038-0.043 W/mK depending on format.
Hemp
Hemp fibres are produced from hemp straw of the hemp plant. Most hemp is imported, but an increasing amount of home-grown crop is becoming available. Hemp grows up to a height of nearly 4 metres within a period of 100-120 days. Because the plants shade the soil, no chemical protection or toxic additives are required for hemp cultivation. The product is composed of, usually, 85% hemp fibre with the ballance made up of polyester binding and 3-5% soda added for fire proofing.
Straw
Straw is an agricultural by-product, the dry stalks of cereal plants, after the grain and chaff have been removed. Straw makes up about half of the yield of cereal crops such asbarley, oats, rice, rye and wheat.
SOPREMA is a global manufacturer, offering innovative and cost effective waterproofing, insulation and soundproofing solutions and services enabling customers to build better.
The Soprema group offers original and highly effective solutions comprised of SBS and APP bituminous waterproofing, PMMA and PU liquid resins, structural waterproofing systems, synthetic membranes, green roofs and functional surface finishes.
Providing durable waterproofing to extend the lifetime of buildings.
Soprema has a complete range of technical drawings, technical data sheets and product documentation to support specifiers with their construction projects.
SOPREMA is not only recognized as a global leader in waterproofing, but also in insulation. SOPREMA manufactures both thermal and acoustic insulation systems. They offer a wide range of EPS and XPS roof insulation boards of varying thickness, as well as PIR insulation. In other words: you are sure to find the perfect match for your project.
SOPREMA XPS | PIR | PAVATEX | TECSOUND INSULATION BOARDS
In addition, Soprema also supples a wide range of insulation products, including EPS, XPS, PIR and the Pavatex range of Natural Wood Fibre and Pavatextil insulation solutions.
XPS
Company offers an industry leading range of extremely high performance, extruded polystyrene XPS closed cell insulation boards.
XPS is suitable for many varied insulation applications including inverted and green roofs, rooftop car parks, parking garages, floors, interior walls, cavity walls, foundation walls, and below-ground works.
XPS is known for its impressive thermal conductivity ratings (as low as 0.029W/mk), enabling thinner boards to be utilized while nevertheless guaranteeing high thermal insulation performance year after year.
PIR
SOPREMA is known for its polyisocyanurate or PIR insulation, which is composed of small cells containing a gas and polyols.
PIR is characterised by excellent thermal insulation, even in boards with limited thickness, providing considerable gains in weight as compared to mineral wool.
Moreover, the material has excellent compressive strength, providing a robust and stable surface which can withstand high loading.
PAVATEX
PAVATEX is a Soprema range of wood fibre insulation. This natural insulation material is suitable for both new build and retrofit systems for walls, floors and roofs.
Made from waste wood that is collected from various sawmills, PAVATEX scores high on sustainability.
ACOUSTIC INSULATION
In terms of acoustic insulation, Soprema TECSOUND is an optimum solution to reduce noise pollution.
These synthetic soundproofing membranes come with numerous advantages, such as high elasticity and flexibility or being rot-proof and ageing-resistant
SOPREMA prides itself on excellent service. Both for refurbishment projects and new builds, you can count on support from our experts in insulation, who are happy to share their knowledge and years of experience.
