Celotex® and Corporate History

CELOTEX® began life in London in 1925 but has now been based in Suffolk for just over half of its 87-year history. The company grew throughout the 20th century and expanded its product line to include a variety of construction materials such as roofing shingles and siding. Celotex® continues to operate in the present, producing various building sheathing and insulating products, having passed through various reorganizations and changes. Celotex® has retained a “family business” culture, with many employees staying for many years, and sometimes with several generations of the same family working for the company.

The success of the UK sales operation, originally based at offices in The Strand, led to the creation of a factory at Stonebridge Park, in north-west London, where work started in 1937. In the 1970s, however, the Celotex® Corporation introduced a new type of ceiling tile made from the polymer isocyanurate which led eventually to development of the current product range, with production of rigid polyisocyanurate (PIR) starting at Hadleigh in 1980.

Today, Celotex® is the UK market leader in high-performance PIR insulation solutions.

Celotex® An Inventor Of 12mm PIR Insulation Board

Although the excellent thermal insulation properties of PIR were recognised, it remained something of a niche product for many years. PIR is one of the fastest-growing insulation sectors in the UK. Although the Hadleigh plant is now the largest PIR facility in the UK, Celotex® is by no means the only player in the game.

Celotex® aims to enhance its offer through innovation, service and support. In fact, Celotex invented the thinnest PIR insulation board with an incredibly low thickness of 12mm. Thinner PIR insulation products are expected to grow as they are useful for “retrofitting” in existing buildings where space is at a premium. The 12mm PIR board soon became the company's flagship product. 

Today, Celotex® PIR boards are recognized to be one of the thinnest insulation boards on the market, whilst still achieving premium levels of energy efficiency and U values. The company also offers the greatest range of PIR products, including both the thinnest and the thickest boards on the market. Thicker boards help meet the higher levels of insulation now required.

Innovation has also included the introduction of PIR insulation boards laminated with 12.5mm plasterboard, which speeds the construction process on-site. Celotex PL4000 insulated plasterboards made from PIR insulation core bonded to 12.5mm plasterboard are a beautiful example of the efforts the company has made to reduce costs of installation.

3 Celotex Groups of General Purpose PIR Insulation Boards

Celotex® provides a range of general-purpose insulation boards that can be used in masonry walls, pitched roofs, flat roofs and more. 

PIR Insulation boards are versatile and available in a wide range of thicknesses from 12mm up to 200mm.
Celotex® grouped the boards into 3 product ranges, starting from 12mm up to 45mm, from 50mm up to 100mm and from 110mm up to 200mm thick. Group will strongly depend on the application type.

The Celotex® TB4000 range is a high performance PIR board with thicknesses ranging from 12mm to 40mm. The thin characteristics of TB4000 mean that the TB4000 range is particularly suited to combatting localised heat losses and thermal bridging. The TB4000 Range comes in 7 thicknesses: 12mm, 20mm, 25mm, 30mm, 35mm, 40mm and 45mm.

Celotex® GA4000 insulation boards are very similar to TB4000 insulation boards, in that they are general purpose PIR boards that can be used in a number of different applications. However, TB4000 insulation boards are much thinner than the GA4000 range. The GA4000 Range comes in 7 thicknesses: 50mm, 60mm, 65mm, 70mm, 75mm, 80mm, 90mm and 100mm.

XR4000 Range insulation boards have been developed to provide simple solutions for overcoming localised thermal bridges. Celotex® XR4000 is targeted at ‘cut-to-fit’ applications between rafters or joists and enables users to achieve lower U-values with a single layer of insulation than has previously been possible.

XR4000 Range comes in 7 thicknesses: 110mm, 120mm, 130mm, 140mm, 150mm, 165mm and 200mm.

Celotex® PIR insulation has been independently assessed by BRE Global and has been accredited with an A+ rating when compared to the BRE Green Guide 2008. The results also show that Celotex offers a lower environmental impact than other typical PIR manufacturers.
