EPS70 GARAGE DOOR INSULATION
Polystyrene garage door insulation (EPS70) is a lightweight but strong insulating medium obtained from expanded polystyrene granules that provides excellent adhesion properties that can be used to stick them to the garage door. The term EPS70 relates to expanded polystyrene which has a compressive strength of 70 kPa. EPS has many advantages - it has a thermal conductivity of 0.032W/mK which makes this product a high door insulator throughout the year. The big advantage of EPS is that it has no thermal drifts or loss of R-Value over the time. In fact, EPS leads the other insulation products when it comes to R-value per £. The most popular polystyrene used to insulate garage door is a white EPS70 offering 70kPa. However, expanded polystyrene is offered in different colours of material that affect its thermal performance. Either white or grey expandable polystyrene boards can be used as part of a garage door insulation project. White EPS, while still offering a high thermal performance, requires slightly thicker levels to achieve the same thermal performance as graphite-enhanced grey EPS. For example, while a project may call for 40mm of white EPS, the same thermal performance can be achieved with 20mm of grey (graphite) EPS. Being lightweight it can be easily cut with a handsaw, however, for a smoother cut you will need a hot wire cutter. To stick them to the garage door you will need quick setting adhesive such as insulation polyurethane foam adhesive. Fixing of 1 m2 of EPS boards with CT84 weights 100g only. Expanded polystyrene does not come in any of the KIT form because doors are not the same in the UK.
POLYSTYRENE GARAGE DOOR THICKNESSES ǀ MANUFACTURERS
Polystyrene garage door insulation boards are available in an extensive range of thicknesses such as: 10mm ǀ 20mm ǀ 25mm ǀ 30mm ǀ 40mm ǀ 50mm
Board measures 1000mm x 500mm or 1200mm x 600mm and comes in square edge finish with a coverage of 0.5m2 or 0.72m2. Depending on thickness and brand, rigid insulation boards come in multiple name options, including Ceresit, Stylite, Jablite, Arbet, Styropoz, PermaRock, Webertherm or EWI EPS.
POLYSTYRENE GARAGE DOOR INSULATION COST
UK garage doors typically range between 7ft (2.13m) to 10ft (3.04m) wide, and 6ft (1.82m) to 7ft (2.13m) high. To put into perspective, an average size garage door would cover 6.5m2 - 7.5m2. You will need 9 sheets (1200mm x 600mm) to insulate this size door. The actual EPS cost per square metre (m2) will depend on the thickness of the polystyrene board itself. The thicker the EPS panel, the more we would be paying for a board.
Expect to pay for 30mm anything from £37.35 to £42.30, depending on its density. You will have to add the cost of foam adhesive which is £14.20. To sum all up, to insulate your garage door with white polystyrene (EPS70) you would have to spend around £54.4.
