In search of the  thinnest insulation.*

Are you one of those who struggle with a space limit and know what it's like when every inch matters? Or maybe you simply want to insulate your summer house, a camper or a van and have no idea what materials to choose from?

Luckily, you don't have to worry about the loss of space anymore to get the most efficient protection available.

Nowadays technology allows you to choose from a variety of insulations as thin as 12mm. With its thermal conduction as little as 0,22 W/mk. Impressive, isn't it?

Celotex®️ is one of the most experienced insulation manufacturers with its 12mm PIR insulation board, followed by Xtratherm®️ 15mm PIR sheet.

3mm is the only difference between them-is that all? Not necessary!

12mm Celotex PIR offers compressive strength of 120 kPa. 30kPa less then 15mm Xtratherm (compressive strength:150 kPa).

Surely with a Celotex you got remarkable history reaching as 97 years.

It was formed in 1925 as part of the Celotex Corporation of America as an importer of fibreboard insulation manufactured by the United States company in Marrero, Louisiana. In the 1970s, however, the Celotex Corporation introduced a new type of ceiling tile made from the polymer isocyanurate which led eventually to development of the current product range, with production of rigid polyisocyanurate (PIR) starting at Hadleigh in 1980.

Although the excellent thermal insulation properties of PIR were recognised, it remained something of a niche product for many years.

However, the onset of stricter building regulations since 2002, requiring ever-higher levels of insulation as part of the drive to reduce carbon emissions, has seen PIR come into its own, as less efficient materials would take up too much space if used in sufficient thickness to provide the levels of insulation now demanded.

Not that success has fallen into the company’s lap. Although the Hadleigh plant is now the largest PIR facility in the UK, Celotex is by no means the only player in the game. Celotex also seeks to add value to its brand by providing performance data for its boards, so giving customers confidence in its products and saving them the time of having to do their own calculations in order to satisfy building controls. Celotex has retained a “family business” culture, with many employees staying for many years, and sometimes with several generations of the same family working for the company.

For products of up to 90mm, Celotex uses “free rise” technology, where the expansion of the foam is controlled by the quantity of the mix used, the speed of the reaction and the speed of the line.

What the competitor has to offer?

Xtratherm is a company with proven 20 years of experience as a leading thermal insulation manufacturer, with factories in Ireland and the UK. Xtratherm offers the construction industry a range of innovative complete solutions, encompassing roofs, walls and floors.

By combining these innovative products you can meet your requirements, as well as reaching passive standards. Xtratherm has been awarded The Workplace WellBeing Charter. The Workplace Wellbeing Charter is endorsed by the UK Department of Health and is widely recognised as the business standard for workplace wellbeing across the UK.

This being said Celotex has a little more to offer in terms of history. For sure everyone have heard of the Celotex company.

What these two products have in common?

So….. Both boards, are faced on each side by a metal foil, both offer same size 2400mmx1200mm, same thermal conductivity of 0.022 W/mk and the same vapour resistivity of 100 MNs/gm. Both PIR boards has been assessed by the BBA (British Board of Agrément) for its defined applications and compliance with the relevant Building Regulations.

Celotex TB4012, the same as Xtratherm Thin-R, is an excellent thermal insulation material, offers thermal conductivity as low as 0.022 W/m.K which helps to reduce the thickness of insulation required to hit the target U-values.

PIR boards enhance space in the construction design and help to reduce the heating and cooling costs within the building. Those rigid boards can be readily cut using a sharp knife. Lightweight boards are straightforward to handle, fit and transport. They are stable, rot proof and will remain effective for the life span of the building.

Both are a perfect choice if you need to avoid any damp issues.

Ending the comparison-both provide the same most efficient U-values with minimal intrusion into valuable living space. This extremely thin material is an undisputed winner among the other insulation products.
