COATED FIRE BATTS ǀ FIRE SLAB THICKNESSES
Fire slab is a high density, innovative stone wool core, pre-coated on both sides with a high performance ablative coating providing up to 4 hours fire resistance for sealing a wide range of service penetrations. High-density insulation slabs such as Rockwool RW range or Knauf RS Rocksilk range can also be used as fire slabs. Since they can be foil faced, they can provide not only acoustic performance but also outstanding fire properties for both new build and refurbishment projects.
Fire slabs are usually supplied in 1200mm x 600mm size. In terms of fire protection slabs, Rockwool, Kingspan, Knauf, Astroflame, Nullifire, Protecta and Sika are the commonly recognised brands.
Fire slabs are most commonly found in 50mm and 60mm thicknesses. There are companies such as Nullifire that offer additional thicknesses such as 100mm. There is a direct correlation between the fire slab thicknesses and the amount of them that they will retard the fire. In this article, we will be reviewing all the available thicknesses of common building fire slabs.
FIRE SLABS THICKNESSES CORRELATION
The thicker the board the more time the fireboard will hold up and not deteriorate in the event of a fire. Tests have proved the capability of a single 50mm batt to provide up to 2 hours fire resistance Integrity and insulation ratings which are dependent upon the service penetrations and void size. Where 4 hours integrity and insulation are required it is recommended to use 60mm Ablative Coated Batt. Remember, if there is a hole in the board to allow for wiring, this will eliminate the protection that the fireboard provides.
